How to Find a Good Thesis Topic
Making a master’s project is always a good idea. Although, it is always challenging to find an ideal thesis topic. No matter whether you are to write a Computer Science thesis or an Economics thesis, your thesis topic should be interesting to you and to the research committee. At least, you will have to find a compromise with your advisor as for the thesis topic you will be investigating.
It is extremely important not to choose a certain thesis topic only because it is your supervisor’s pet area. If you do, it will be rather challenging for you to stay motivated. The result will be the same if you choose a thesis topic only because of its remarkable nature. You will not be able to convince your reader that your research is significant enough if you, personally, are not interested in your thesis topic.
The tips below can assist you in finding a good thesis topic:
- Recollect all the reports, course works or research papers that you have made. Thesis topics are more interesting to investigate if you just continue developing the ideas. In this course, you should choose the topic that you already dealt with;
- Ask your supervisor for some advice. You should be confident that the research community has a need in investigation of your thesis topic. Nobody but your supervisor will explain you better what thesis topics have already been investigated and which of them can be studied;
- Make sure that auxiliary information to research your thesis topic is enough. If you do not have enough sources, your thesis topics may be really hard to investigate. In such cases, it is better to choose thesis topics that are not difficult to research due to the wide availability of the sources.
Remember - the choice of thesis topics should be explained and justified at the thesis defense. So, first, explain this choice to yourself and then persuade your committee.
